Africa Chapter: Popular used cars from various countries announced

Africa is not a single market. The same car can have completely different rankings in different countries, and each country has its own list of available models.

I. West Africa: Cars for Family UseIn Nigeria, there are two price ranges for cars. For sedans, there are Toyota Corolla, Camry, Accord, Civic, Alphard, and Sonata. For SUVs and luxury cars, there are Honda RAV4, Hyundai Venza, Honda Pilot, Lexus RX 350, RX300, and ES 350. In Ghana, there are three main categories of vehicles: small cars like Vitz, Passo, Alto, Picanto, and i10; MPVs and utility vehicles like Voxy, NV350 Caravan, HiAce, and Caravan Bus; and SUVs like CX-5, C-HR, Outlander, and Sportage. The top three most popular vehicles in this region are Vitz, Voxy, and Demio. Land Cruiser and Mercedes-Benz Class C cars belong to the high-end niche market. In Côte d’Ivoire, SUVs and off-road vehicles are more popular, such as Land Cruiser Prado, Honda CR-V, Land Cruiser, and Mazda Premacy. This market follows left-hand driving rules, which align naturally with Chinese car manufacturing standards. In Senegal, the popular choices are Toyota Corolla (1.3, 1.5, 1.6 liter gasoline engines) and Hyundai Accent. For durable vehicles, Hilux and Land Cruiser are preferred. In Cameroon, the best-selling vehicles are RAV4, Corolla Verso, Vanguard, Grandeur, and i10. In Guinea, Hilux and CR-V are the most popular choices. Conakry Port is a major import hub for these vehicles.

II. East Africa: Compact Cars and MPVsIn Kenya, the most popular vehicles are Fielder, Probox, Vitz, Demio, Axio, and Nissan Note. Above these, there are Prado, Land Cruiser, X-Trail, and Fit. It’s important to distinguish between two types of vehicles here: Fielder and Axio are mainly used for household purposes, while Probox is designed for commercial use, especially for delivering goods and providing transportation services. In Tanzania, the most popular vehicles include Harrier, IST, Vanguard, RAV4, Premio, Noah, and Raum, along with Dualis, X-Trail, Fit, and Alphard. In Uganda, the popular choices are Harrier, Noah, Wish, Probox, Premio, and Vitz. Having Noah alongside Harrier is a common feature in East Africa. Ethiopia deserves a separate discussion. In terms of new vehicles, the Land Cruiser 70 series accounts for about 26% of the market share, followed by Chery Arrizo 5 with about 13%. This is a rare instance where Chinese cars make it onto the list in Africa.

III. Central Africa: Utility Vehicles and MPVs Take the Top SpotIn Congo, the most popular vehicles are HiAce, Alphard, Harrier, RAV4, Land Cruiser Prado, and Probox. Among them, Prado leads the market in terms of sales volume. Utility vehicles and MPVs dominate the passenger vehicle segment, indicating that there is a strong demand for these vehicles for passenger transport and business transportation purposes.

IV. Southern Africa: Pickup Truck MarketIn South Africa, Hilux has long been the most popular choice. Followed by Polo Vivo, Ranger, D-Max, Swift, along with Corolla Cross, Starlet, and Fortuner. At the used car level, Ranger once surpassed Hilux in sales. Chinese brands are growing rapidly here, with Chery and Jetta seeing significant year-on-year increases in sales. In Zambia, the best-selling used Toyota cars are Allion, Mark X, Corolla Axio, Sprinter, and Belta. The market for utility vehicles still favors Hilux. In Zimbabwe, Mazda 323, Hilux, and Nissan Caravan remain popular among consumers.

V. North Africa: French-Speaking Countries’ Favorite CarsIn Egypt, Toyota Corolla remains the most popular car. Followed by Alphard, Verna, Aveo, Sunny, and Logan. In Morocco, Dacia dominates the market, with Sandero, Logan, Express, Duster, along with Clio, 208, and T-Roc being popular choices. In Algeria, Chery Coolray and Chery Tiggo 7 are also very popular, along with Clio, Caddy, Peugeot 206, and Fiat Tipo. Africa isn’t a single market; it consists of dozens of different car models. Popular models can change frequently, so don’t overstock your inventory.
