According to official Mexican government announcements, imports of automotive components from all over the world will be exempt from a 10% tariff for the next five years. This measure is seen as an important step in attracting new investments in the automotive industry and strengthening local manufacturing capabilities.
>The relevant regulations were implemented through a decree issued by the Presidential Palace. They have been published in the Federal Official Gazette and will take effect in mid-October. The decree modifies the Tariff Schedule of the General Law on Imports and Exports, adding the tax code 9803.00.01 as the category for these preferential imports.
>Under the new rules, not all importers can enjoy this zero-tariff treatment. Only those who hold authorization to use bonded warehouses under the Customs Law, and who meet the guidelines set by the Mexican Ministry of Economy, can benefit from this policy. In other words, this policy is aimed at companies with the ability to assemble, process, and store components locally, rather than at general trade imports.
>Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum stated in the decree that, given the global supply chain restructuring and manufacturing relocation trends, Mexico needs to further strengthen its competitiveness as a destination for automotive investments, especially for projects that are implemented through SKD and CKD methods.
>The Mexican federal government believes that this temporary tax exemption will help reduce the costs of setting up new automotive projects, thereby promoting the establishment of production lines, creating job opportunities, facilitating technology transfer, and enhancing the integrity of the domestic supply chain. Officials also believe that this move will further encourage the expansion of automotive projects within Mexico, strengthen regional value chains, improve the competitiveness of the domestic automotive industry, and drive economic development and employment growth.
