Entering Russia from Vladivostok: The tide of personal imported cars is back, and China's car sources are catching up with Japanese cars

[Vladivostok News] According to a report by Russian Far East media PrimaMedia on February 27, the Information Service of The Russian Federation Customs Service (FCS) disclosed that since the beginning of this year, Russia has imported passenger cars for "personal use" through customs in the Far East. The number has reached 41,400, an increase of 25% over the same period in 2025. This increase also confirms from the side that under the multiple changes in the supply, prices and tax environment of new cars, the Russian market is still relying on personal channels, and the Far East port continues to play the role of the "main entrance".

Customs data shows that of the 41,400 vehicles, 29,000 entered the country via the Port of Vladivostok (Vladivostok). Wusuli Customs ranks second in the number of vehicles imported by individuals. In addition, more than 10,700 vehicles entered through the bus ports of Primorsky Krai. The relevant customs supervision points of Khabarovsk Customs and Chita Customs have handled about 630 vehicles each since the beginning of the year.

From the perspective of brand structure, FCS pointed out that among individual imported vehicles at the Far East Port, Japanese brands still rank first; China brands rank second; and Korean brands rank third. This is consistent with the consumption and vehicle source pattern of the Russian Far East, which is traditionally dominated by Japanese cars. However, the presence of China brands on the personal import side continues to rise, which also shows that Russian buyers are more and more proficient in the path of "finding cars from the Asian market."

[Brief Comment] For China automobile export practitioners, there are two points worth looking at in this set of data: First, the scale of "personal use" at the Far East port has rebounded, which means that price-sensitive demand in the Russian market will still pass through personal channels in the short term. Searching for solutions; Second, although China brands rank second, they can steadily increase their volume in regions like the Far East where Japan is strong, which is in itself a signal. However, it should be reminded that personal import channels are extremely sensitive to policies and billing rules. If companies use this as the main starting point for sales to Russia, they must pre-manage the risks of compliance documents, delivery cycles and tax changes. Otherwise, once the rules are tightened, the pace can easily shift from "growth" to "backlog".
