The Russian market is clearly stratified in terms of price bands and usage scenarios. The supply of China brands in the new market is more stable, while the second-hand market has long relied on the reputation and stock system of Japanese car sources...

Russian automotive data agency "AVTOSTAT (Автостат)" quoted А А "π π К" data in its online program "AVTOSTAT Operativka" saying that Russia imported a total of 46,800 passenger cars in February 2026, a year-on-year increase of 35%. It is worth noting that this growth comes from both new and used car markets: in February, Russia imported 20,900 new passenger cars, a year-on-year increase of 29%; imported 25,900 used passenger cars, a year-on-year increase of 40%. The growth rate is significantly faster.
In terms of brand and model structure, AVTOSTAT pointed out that the leading brand in new car imports in February was Geely, and the single model that attracted the most attention was Monjaro (the overseas counterpart model/platform series that is often called "Star Yue L" in China). In the field of used car imports, Toyota ranks first among the brands, and Honda Freed ranks first at the model level. For China export practitioners, this combination of "new cars looking at China brands and second-hand ones looking at Japanese brands" is not surprising: the Russian market is clearly stratified in terms of price bands and usage scenarios, the supply of China brands on the new car end is more stable, while the second-hand end has long relied on the reputation and stock system of Japanese car sources.
What is more worthy of careful reading by exporting companies is the change in the proportion of source countries. AVTOSTAT disclosed that among Russia's new car imports in February, China still ranked first, accounting for 67.2%, but it was lower than 78% in January; second place was Kyrgyzstan, accounting for 20.5%, and no other country's share reached 5%. In terms of used cars, Japan's share increased from 52.5% in January to 60.2% in February; China's share was 21.2%, and the rest of the country was significantly below 10%.
[Brief Comment] Among the second-hand passenger cars imported in February, 95% had engine power below 160 horsepower, and only 5% exceeded 160 horsepower. This feature means that Russia's main second-hand imports are still family/commuter oriented models that are easier to maintain, and more controllable taxes and vehicle costs. For China companies, this also indirectly proves that if you want to find opportunities in second-hand or "quasi-new car" related businesses in Russia, focusing on economical powertrains, durability and parts supply, it is often more close to mainstream market demand than blindly pursuing high performance.
