According to a recent report quoted by the Xinhua Agency by the Ministry of Commerce of Cambodia, Cambodia's spending on importing cars in 2025 will reach US$1.1 billion, a significant increase of 60% from US$686.7 million in 2024. The report did not disclose the specific number of imported vehicles throughout the year, but judging from the increase in the amount, Cambodia's automobile import demand is heating up significantly.
Thong Mengdavid, deputy director of the China-ASEAN Research Center of the University of Science and Technology of Cambodia, said in an interview with Xinhua Agency that one of the key reasons for this rapid increase in imports is the continued strong demand for electric vehicles (EV). "The registration of electric vehicles is growing rapidly, with thousands of electric vehicles joining Cambodia's road transportation system in 2025," he pointed out. Thong Mengdavid further analyzed that this trend not only reflects the shift in consumer preferences towards greener travel, but also means that the market structure is undergoing deeper changes: the expansion of charging infrastructure and more aggressive national electrification goals are providing conditions for medium-and long-term growth of the electric vehicle market in Cambodia.
[Brief Comment] Cambodia's signal of "import volume first" deserves attention: the market is still in the expansion stage, and the price band may also move up with the penetration of EV. However, opportunities are not limited to the entire vehicle. As the charging network rolls out, supporting charging equipment, installation and maintenance, spare parts supply and after-sales service capabilities will become the key to determining brand reputation and repurchase. It is recommended that exporting companies incorporate local charging standard adaptation, channel training and parts guarantee into the plan in advance while promoting the introduction of vehicle models to avoid "cars can be sold well and services cannot keep up."
