Mexico's imposition of additional tariffs on China has had a serious impact on China's automobile exports.
1. Tariff policy and direct impact: Starting from January 1, 2026, Mexico will impose additional tariffs on goods (including China automobiles) from countries without trade agreements, with the tax rate up to 50%. This led to a 45.3% year-on-year drop in China's automobile exports to Mexico in January this year, to only US$188 million. Mexico fell from its position as China's largest automobile export market (which peaked at US$1.061 billion in November 2025) to 16th in January this year.
2. Industry and economic losses: China's Ministry of Commerce has assessed that Mexico's new tariffs and related non-tariff barriers (such as complex customs inspections) will affect more than US$30 billion in China's exports to Mexico. Among them, losses in the electromechanical industry alone (especially in the automotive and parts sectors) are expected to reach approximately US$9 billion, and other industries such as metals, chemicals, and textiles will also be negatively affected.
3. Positions of both parties:
Mexico: President Claudia Simbaum argued that the new tariffs are in line with World Trade Organization (OMC) rules and within its most-favored-nation (NMF) commitments.
China: China warned against this and said it would consider taking countermeasures.
4. Changes in the global export pattern: Affected by this policy, China's major global export markets for automobiles have shifted to countries such as the United Arab Emirates, the United Kingdom, Belgium, Russia and Brazil in January 2026. During the same period, China's freight vehicle exports to Mexico also fell by 15.7% year-on-year, ranking fourth among its major export destinations.
